This paper considers the use of soft decisions to mitigate error propagation in a decision feedback equalizer (DFE). The decision device for the soft decision feedback equalizer is optimized by minimizing the mean-squared error (MSE) cost function defined at the input of the decision device. Furthermore, a bit error rate (BER) optimized soft decision device is derived for a BPSK modulation scheme. Simulation results comparing the performance of the MSE/BER optimized soft DFE and the conventional DFE are presented.
